The worst fears of bird-flu outbreak may have come true. India may record its first human bird flu cases if five persons in West Bengal, under observation for displaying "clinical symptoms" associated with the infection after handling backyard poultry, are confirmed to be afflicted with the disease.
All five are the residents of Murshidabad, one of the seven West Bengal districts hit by bird flu. Investigations revealed that the men had handled backyard poultry soon after the disease infected and killed birds.

There was a scare in Bangalore a couple of years ago and the poultry and egg industry was badly hit. We stopped buying chicken and eggs. Now the scare has blown over and the industry is back to normal. The flu should not spread to other states then the poultry industry will be badly hit.

I've just read about this in the Times of India. It seems confirmation will come from the labs in Pune tomorrow. Very worrying.
